The first care home to be delivered through the partnership between Suffolk County Council and Care UK is being opened in Mildenhall this week.

People are invited to the opening of Mildenhall Lodge in St John’s Close at 2pm on Friday when councillor Alan Murray, cabinet member for health and adult care at Suffolk County Council, will cut the ribbon.

Care UK was selected as Suffolk County Council’s partner in 2012 and is investing £60million in delivering 10 new care homes in the county.

The new homes are to provide additional dementia and nursing care in modern, purpose-designed residential accommodation, with separate day clubs which help older people living in their own homes to enjoy their independence for longer.

The celebration afternoon on Friday will continue until 7pm, with tours of the facilities, free refreshments and activities for children.

Mr Murray said: “It is fantastic that the opening of the first new home and club is only a little over a week away. Mildenhall Lodge and the other new homes and clubs across the county will allow the most vulnerable in society to receive the care and support they need in purpose-built, dementia-friendly facilities.”

Mildenhall Lodge can provide accommodation for 60 residents and at the adjacent Mildenhall Club –previously known as a wellbeing centre – local older people can enjoy hobbies, a freshly cooked meal and make new friends. The club members can also use the care home’s facilities, including the café, hairdressers and cinema.

Andrew Knight, Care UK’s managing director for residential care homes, said: “We very much look forward to offering members of the community the opportunity to see the new facilities before our first residents, including those from nearby Wamil Court, move into the home during the coming weeks.”

Once all the residents have moved out, the old care home building at Wamil Court will close and pass back to Suffolk County Council to decide its future use.

On Saturday, there is a public open day at Mildenhall Lodge from 10am to 4pm, with refreshments, tours and children’s entertainment.
