Burglary attempt in Mildenhall

A man from Nottingham has been charged following an attempted burglary in Mildenhall last week.

The incident took place between 5.15pm and 5.30pm on Thursday, March 20 at an address in Milden Court.

A man purporting to be a door-to-door salesman was disturbed inside the property of the vulnerable victim, at which point he left empty-handed.

Following a search of the local area by police officers, two men were arrested in connection with this incident and taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre (PIC).

26-year-old Daniel West, of Hervey Green, Nottingham, was subsequently charged with burglary with intent to steal and also for acting as a pedlar without a pedlar’s certificate.

West was remanded at Bury PIC and appeared at Bury St Edmunds Magistrates’ Court on Saturday.

The second man arrested was Christopher Waldram, 33, of Killerton Green, Nottingham. He was charged with acting as a pedlar without a pedlar’s certificate and has been bailed to appear at Bury St Edmunds Magistrates’ Court on Friday, April 4.

Police are reminding residents to take the following measures to protect themselves against bogus callers:

-LOCK – Keep your front and back doors locked, even when at home.

-STOP – Before answering the door, stop and think if you are expecting anyone and ensure that the back door is locked with the key removed.

-CHAIN – If you decide to open the door, put the chain on first and keep it on whilst you speak to the person on the doorstep. -CHECK – Check the caller’s details and identity before you let them into your home. If it is someone claiming to be an official, ask for and carefully check their identity card. If in doubt, close the door and call the number on the back of their card or the police on 101. Always dial 999 if you believe a crime is in progress.
