Eight new jobs will be created with the opening of a new 24-hour fitness club at Felixstowe.

Suffolk Coastal District Council has given the go-ahead for the venture, which will be housed in converted offices at Orwell House in Ferry Lane, close to the Port of Felixstowe and the Orwell Green and Cavendish Park housing estates.

The Anytime Fitness club will be staffed beyween 9am and 9pm daily but members can work out at their own convenience, using a securityaccess key fob to enter the club at all times, even when it is not staffed.

The council was told that Orwell House had had about 20,000 sq ft of vacant space over the last five years despite being actively marketed.

In a planning statement, Anytime Fitness said “Members who use Anytime Fitness clubs outside normal hours often include shift workers such as medical professionals, and police and fire officers, and in Felixstowe, very likely workers from the port.”

The region’s mental health trust has pledged to eradicate the use of out of area beds by 2021.
