FIREFIGHTERS are battling a blaze at a Norfolk sugar factory.

The fire broke out in a cooling tower of British Sugar’s Cantley factory just before 3pm this afternoon.

One appliance from Acle, two appliances and the aerial ladder platform from Great Yarmouth, along with crews from Carrow, Earlham and Wymondham are tackling the fire.

A spokesman for British Sugar said: “The local fire brigade service was called to our Cantley sugar factory to attend a fire located away from our main factory buildings.

“I can confirm that all personnel on site have been accounted for, however we are unable to comment any further at the present time as our main priority is to work together with the local fire brigade service.”

A contractor working on site said that they saw smoke coming out of a cooling tower and within seconds it was in flames. They said the site’s own fire crews were the first to start extinguishing the fire and that staff on the site had been kept well away from the area as it is where gas bottles are stored.
