One man dies and another fighting for his life after Essex road accident

A driver in his 50s has died and his passenger was treated for life-threatening injuries after a crash on the A133 near Clacton on Saturday.

Police confirmed on Sunday they had bailed a 20-year-old Clacton man, who was initially arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and driving while under the influence of drink or drugs.

The three-car collision happened at 7.45am at Weeley Heath, almost directly underneath the Bentley Road bridge, with Essex County Fire and Rescue Service saying four people were trapped.

Two men in a purple Vauxhall Agila were reported at the scene as receiving life-threatening injuries.

The Vauxhall driver, a man in his 50s from the Colchester area, was taken to Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel but died later in the afternoon.

His passenger was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, initially with life-threatening injuries.

However, police confirmed on Sunday his condition was now “serious but stable”.

The 20-year-old Clacton man was driving a white Fiat 500 and was arrested shortly after the incident.

Two women in a Hyundai Getz received less serious injuries and were taken to Colchester General Hospital.

One fire and rescue crew from Weeley and two from Clacton were called to the scene to help free four trapped people, with Essex Fire and Rescue Service saying they were all in one car.

After being called at 7.50am, they released the first casualty at 8.33am and a further two by 8.50am. All four were released by 9.22am. Police have asked anyone who witnessed what happened or who saw any of the vehicles in the area at that time to come forward.

The arrested man has been released on bail pending further enquiries until May 31.
