Volunteers who give up time each week to help keep a Suffolk nature reserve open have been rewarded for their hard work.

More than 30 National Trust volunteers carry out various roles at Orford Ness, from helping people reach the site and find their way round, to answering questions about the wildlife and history of the former MoD testing site and gathering detailed data about the birds and wildlife on the Ness.

Following the annual Community Day, which invites surrounding villages to visit for free, a number of volunteers received awards for dedication.

Countryside manager Grant Lohoar presented 12 volunteers with commemorative five year badges, while volunteer and specialist bird ringer Gillian Stannard received her 10 year badge.

A celebration cake, badges and letters from regional director Ben Cowell were presented to three volunteers who have each given 20 years of volunteering. Silke Miles, Mike Marsh and David Crawshaw were all thanked for their hard work.

Mr Lohoar said: “Through all the continued hard work, some of the team have amassed a huge amount of information that is so valuable to us and they continue to do so, and we can only thank them from the bottom of our hearts.”

Firefighters have attended a “rescue” in Ipswich.

Three residents at an Essex care home suffered smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in a bedroom causing extensive damage to the building.

Firefighters have been called to a blaze in a residential street in Ipswich.

An appeal has been launched to find an Essex man wanted in connection with a failure to appear at court.

The University of Essex is among more than 60 institutions set for strike action next month over pensions – however staff at the University of Suffolk are not expected to take part.

The care received by patients was assessed by an independent panel

A reality TV star was caught reading about horses while driving along a Suffolk road.
