Orford Ness

AN eye-catching lighthouse that has guarded the Suffolk coast for generations will open its doors to members of the public for one of the last times this weekend.

The iconic Orford Ness Lighthouse is under threat of falling into the sea and is soon set to be turned off.

The National Trust and Trinity Lighthouse will be opening the building’s doors for one of the last times on Sunday.

Visitors will be able to follow a self-guided walking trail round the unique nature reserve, step inside the lighthouse and meet the attendant on duty.

The decommissioning of the lighthouse has been criticised – with many believing it should be saved. However bosses have given an assurance that Southwold Lighthouse will extend its range, providing a beacon for passing ships.

Ferries will run every 20 minutes from Orford Quay between 10am and 1.40pm on Sunday, with the last ferry leaving the Ness at 5pm.
