A man who stopped his car “momentarily” on a railway line after ignoring a barrier and flashing lights at a Suffolk level crossing has been fined £250.

Conrad Taylor was taking his son to catch a train at the Oulton Broad North station in September last year when he was seen to cross the white lines in the centre of the road to avoid the barrier and then stop briefly on the railway line when two girls started to cross the road ahead of him, Ipswich Crown Court heard.

The incident was witnessed by the signalman who made a note of his registration number and contacted the police.

Taylor admitted being the driver of the car and said he’d been 10 to 15ft away from the crossing when the lights turned red.

He had started to brake but because there was a car behind him he had gone on to the crossing and then had to stop because of the of the girls crossing the road in front of him.

Taylor, 48, of Blyford Road, Lowestoft, admitted careless driving on September 30 last year at the level crossing in Bridge Road, Oulton Broad North, and in addition to being fined he was ordered to pay £185 costs and a £25 victim surcharge.

His licence was endorsed with seven penalty points.

Steven Dyble, for Taylor, said his client accepted deciding to go through the crossing while the lights were flashing.

He said the train had not been due for another five to seven minutes and his car had only stopped on the crossing “momentarily”.

He said all incidents involving level crossings were serious but in this case there was no collision or injury.

He said Taylor had not been in a hurry on the morning in question.
