Takeaway chains have teamed up with every local authority in Essex in a bid to tackle litter.

McDonalds, KFC and Dominos have backed the Clean Essex campaign, supported by each of the 14 district councils and County Hall.

As well as awareness, the two-month project will be backed up by rubbish picking schemes and fines against litterbugs.

Keep Britain Tidy and the Highways Agency are also involved in the initiative.

In Tendring the council has this week launched a trial scheme of reuseable gull-proof bags for households, in a bid to stop the birds ripping open waste sacks causing rubbish to be strewn across the street.

Colchester Borough Council’s community zone teams will run extra wardens in the town centre and work with businesses, community groups and schools borough-wide.

Martin Hunt, borough councillor for street and waste services, said: “By working together with councils across Essex and businesses we will send a strong message that littering is costly and socially unacceptable.

“I look forward to us building on our existing partnerships to tackle this important issue. I hope the Clean Essex message will encourage everyone to dispose of litter responsibly, enabling our community zone teams to focus resources on other community priorities in future.”

Wendy Schmitt, councillor for place at Braintree District Council, added: “Street cleansing alone costs taxpayers more than £17million a year in Essex, money which frankly could be better spent.

“Every council has their own campaigns, ways of reporting and levels of enforcement, but now for the first time we will be joining forces to really tackle the issue head on and raise awareness.”

Cherry Lewis Taylor, from McDonald’s, said: “It’s vital that everyone takes responsibility for tackling litter. From local businesses like mine to communities and the residents of Essex, we should all make a commitment to help protect our local environment and keep it clean.”

Phil Barton, chief executive of Keep Britain Tidy, said: “The Clean Essex partnership, where local authorities, businesses and communities are working together to tackle the problem of litter, is setting a fantastic example.

“No single organisation can solve the problem of litter in isolation and to see all Essex authorities coming together to run a campaign across the county is exactly the approach we need to see. Essex has realised that by coming together they can make a difference and we commend them for their leadership and focus.”
