Members of Suffolk County Council have voted themselves a 1% increase in allowances for the next four years.

And they have also approved making an allowance available to the chair of county’s new Health and Wellbeing board.

The move, which was recommended by an independent panel and had the backing of the ruling Conservative group, was approved by 40 votes to 6 with 14 abstentions.

The main opposition Labour Party abstained in the vote – the group’s deputy leader Bryony Rudkin had said that the group felt it was wrong for councillors to have to vote on their own allowances, they should be set by the government.

Council leader Mark Bee had said he would support the move because it was modest, and it would represent the only increase for the next four years.

He said he would only be supporting the rise because council workers were also being offered a 1% rise this year – it would have been wrong for councillors to support any increase in allowances if staff were still facing a pay freeze.

The increase, to come in from April 1, will see the basic allowance for councillors increase by £102 a year, from £10,172 to £10,174 a year.

The total allowance for council leader Mark Bee will go up by £356 from £35,602 to £35,958.

  • Joke ,full stop. £36,000 a year ,any jobs going. I'm good at worrying about my own little world and not looking at the overall picture. Lets see a fully list of item claimed for and paid for.

  • £36,000 a year plus special responsibility allowances, travel and subsistence, carers allowances for kids, attending meetings allowance of more £80 for each 4 hours (paid for only 5 mins attendance) and much more becomes well over £50,000 a year for doing very little. What is more if heshe is also a district councillor they get it twice for doing virtually the same job and it is all PENSIONABLE and paid on top of any public pension already received. Not bad money

  • Do we really need the County Council? It seems to just cost an awful lot to ignore local issues and achieve very little! Does anyone know let alone engage with their County Councillor? Time for positive tax payer saving action and disband it.

  • Wish I got allowances with my job. Even better if I could vote on my own rise in allowances. But alas I live in the real world.

  • On behalf of all Suffolk residents I'm sure that we all think this "pay rise" is well deserved. Let's be honest they have worked very hard to save money to fund this by reducing and cutting much needed services to the local population. This hard work in reducing services is thus naturally rewarded with a "bonus" to their wallets and purses financed from these savings. Enjoy your extra money Cllr Bee and colleagues, we all think you richly deserve it, not least for your expertise in the new traffic system in Ipswich town centre. Well done to you all.

  • Unclear what allowance means. Is it pay or or to compensate for loss of earnings? What about expenses (travel)? Is that included in this sum or paid on top? Presumably the payment isn't forced on members so individually they could decide not to accept it. How many have turned it down?

  • And jolly well deserved as i am sure we will all agree - i wonder if there was any chance that they weren't going to award themselves this slap on the back

  • Why doesn't Mark Bee buzz off? lol Why is he pictured at the Waterfront when SCC hates Ipswich? So 40 votes for and 20 votes against.
