A convenience store in Ipswich has announced it is looking into a “potential closure” due to “competitor impact”.

The East of England Co-operative said it had taken “careful consideration” over the possible closure of its Norwich Road store and would look to redeploy staff “where possible”.

The store neighbours a Tesco Express store, which opened in December in the former Emperor Pub.

Roger Grosvenor, executive officer – retail for the East of England Co-operative, said: “As the largest independent retailer in the East of England, owned by its members, we are constantly reviewing our business to ensure we are running effectively and efficiently.

“We currently serve the residents of Ipswich from over 25 food stores, and, following careful consideration, we have taken the difficult decision to look at the potential closure of our store on Norwich Road due to competitor impact.

"So the area loses yet another pub due to Tesco and now another shop, surprise surprise. Told you so springs to mind, still when they have wiped out everything they can charge what they will."

“We are currently in consultation with the staff and will look to redeploy where possible.

“There are a number of East of England Co-op stores in the surrounding area which will continue to serve our members and customers.”
