As 2012 draws to a close, Ipswich has been named as one of the top ten British towns to experience the largest increase in interest from travellers browsing online.

According to holiday planning site TripAdvisor, Suffolk’s county town has been attracting the interest of travellers seeking inspiration for the perfect staycation.

Between January 1 and October 31, Ipswich saw an increase in traffic of 160 per cent on the site compared to last year – placing it at number nine in the top ten of UK towns with the biggest increase in traveller interest.

TripAdvisor describes the town as “the gateway to Suffolk,” and highlights Ipswich’s “beautiful waterfront where visitors can stroll along the quayside”.

It continues: “Its traffic-free town centre also makes it the ideal place for a walk around the town.”

The website also puts the surge in interest in Ipswich down to some of the town’s neighbouring attractions.

“Close by is the heritage coast and its old fishing towns and villages as well as Jimmy’s Farm, home of Jimmy Doherty, TV farmer and pal of Jamie Oliver.”

Despite all the excitement of the summer, with the Olympics and Diamond Jubilee celebrations, London didn’t make the cut, with an increase in interest of just 116pc.

Top ten UK towns with biggest rise in interest on TripAdvisor

1. Leyburn, Yorkshire

2. Christchurch, Dorset

3. Skegness, Lincolnshire

4. Bognor Regis, West Sussex

5. New Milton, Hampshire

6. Huddersfield, Yorkshire

7. Woolacombe, Devon

8. Windsor, Berkshire

9. Ipswich, Suffolk

10. Poole, Dorset

TripAdvisor’s top rated hotels include Milsoms Kesgrave Hall, the Salthouse Harbour Hotel and Hintlesham Hall.

And it’s recommended attractions include the New Wolsey Theatre, Christchurch Park and Dance East on the Waterfront.

The location topping the list for increased interest is the picturesque town of Leyburn in North Yorkshire, which has seen a surge in popularity since it featured in the ITV show, The Dales. Presented by Adrian Edmondson, the show follows residents of the Dales and is set for a third series in 2013.

TripAdvisor spokesperson Emma Shaw said: “With staycations still popular, we wanted to find out which UK towns have captured the attention of British travellers this year.

“With Ipswich experiencing such a significant increase in interest on TripAdvisor, it can hopefully look forward to a bumper 2013 for tourism.”

  • People only research Ipswich and once they find out what a "cesspit" the place is they decide to not visit unless they like visiting one of the empty shop units or charity shops in the town centre. I think Ipswich appeard in the worst places to live not so long ago !

  • TripAdvisor is an American company and Archant has nothing to do with it. I think the Star is just desperate for any news item which could be "spun" as good news. In reality the county of Suffolk has lots to offer visitors - maybe users of TripAdvisor site are just curious to see if it's safe to drive through our less than glorious county town without having to lock themselves in their cars!

  • So what is best: the advice of those who have briefly visited Ipswich and surrounding areas or the advice of those who actually live here? If it is the latter then our advice is "Don't Come".

  • Beach Hut you read the headline wrong if you read it right is says Ipswich is one of the MOST searched places that does not mean its is the top towns searched. And some people that live here and are proud to live here are getting fed up with a small amount of people being negative abd ripping on our town. We know there is things that needs improving but Ipswich does not deserve the hate its getting from a small number of people. Lets get together and make Ipswich better and make it worth while to shop here.

  • poor journalism again. so on reading, Ipswich is NOT one of the most searched for towns, it is one of the top 10 which has had the biggest rise in interest. Two very very different things.

  • "Beautiful waterfront"???? Hideous, out-of-proportion concrete boxes to one side and plastic toy boats to the other. Strange definition of "beautiful".

  • The Star's sister paper lead with "Ipswich - tourist trap ?"; and a sub-header of "Increase in interest put down to county's hotspots". Why the question mark and putdown ? Ipswich has worked hard on its image. We have a first rate events program - such as IP-Art, Music in the Park and Maritime Ipswich - drawing in thousands. We have several new, modern and affordable hotels. We are one of the oldest English Towns; steeped in history, with wide array of architecture and beautiful parks. Let’s hope more tourists, visitors and business ignore the cheap-shots from the EADT and keep coming to boost our town and its economy.

  • “Its traffic-free town centre..." Shouldn't that be shop-free? Looking a town up on the net doesn't equate to actually visiting it. As for "TripAdvisor", I have never seen it mentioned on the net - is this some kind of freebie advert for it? Another Archant offshoot?

  • Just for you and your rose tinted views of Ipswich Scott Brock. I thought that the new Christmas lights in the town centre were really impressive this year, and the Christmas tree on the Cornhill looks fantastic when it is lit up....not so sure about it during daylight though, but yes Ipswich town centre looked impressive when lit up.
