Elton John has announced that he’s coming to Colchester as part of three UK live dates in June next year.

The gig, Elton’s first ever in Colchester, will be in Weston Homes Community Stadium on Sunday, June 29.

“As I have said when asked about the song Home Again on my new album, The Diving Board, there is something very special to me about coming home,” said Elton. “I’ve been all around the world and I truly enjoy playing my music for fans everywhere I can, but I do so look forward to coming back home to England, especially every summer when I get to perform in places I have never played before, like Colchester.”

Ten years ago, Elton John performed at Portman Road in Ipswich and Barry Manilow is due to take to the stage at the stadium next year.

Among the many awards and honours bestowed on Elton John are five Grammys, a Grammy Legend award, Tony Award, Best British Male Artist Brit Award, induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Kennedy Center Honor, Legend of Live Award, 11 Ivor Novello Awards and a knighthood from HM Queen Elizabeth II for ‘services to music and charitable services’. He recently became the recipient of the first ever BRIT Icon Award.

The performance in Colchester will include number one hits and classic songs from his remarkable 40 year career, including tracks from his recently praised album ‘The Diving Board’. Tickets for the shows will go on sale at 10am Friday.

Tim Waddington, general manager at Colchester United FC, said: “We are delighted to be hosting an artist of Elton John’s calibre for our first concert at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

“The past five years have seen us not only create a home on the pitch for Colchester United, but we have also created a real community hub for business and the general public for a wide range of events.

“An event of this size is testament to the work that we have done and also to Colchester’s growing standing within the regional business and entertainment landscape. We are looking forward to working with our partners to deliver a successful night.”

With an unparalleled career that spans five decades, Elton John is one of the top-selling solo artists of all time with 35 gold and 25 platinum albums, 29 consecutive Top 40 hits and an incredible 250-million records worldwide.

Through a partnership with lyricist Tim Rice came the music for the feature film and Broadway stage production of ‘The Lion King.’ He wrote the music for the stage production of ‘Billy Elliot: The Musical’ and more recently for the box office smash, ‘Gnomeo & Juliet.’ In 2011 he returned to Las Vegas for a three year residency with his brand new show ‘The Million Dollar Piano’, billed as “a gargantuan feast of music and imagery”.

Plans are now under way to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the 1973 released album ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ later this year with a film project based on his life set for release in 2014.
