PEOPLE are being urged to embrace the town’s trees to help raise their spirits.

Ipswich Borough Council has an on-going planting policy in the hopes of increasing the number of trees in the town.

The Forestry Commission recently claimed living next to trees makes people happier, and the borough council’s tree expert Andy Whalley echoed the new research.

He said: “Our town is blessed by beautiful parks and open spaces with some magnificent trees and we have an on-going planting policy to increase our tree cover.

“We also run a successful tree sponsorship scheme, so residents can get in touch and, who knows, it might lift their spirits next year and in the future when they see the fruits of their labours.”

To find out about the tree sponsorship scheme you can contact Steve Leech on 01473 433534.

  • Great idea. Hope that all these measures mean a reduction in council tax......some chance of that happening. More curious about the Star's choice of caption for the photo. I never knew what "Sunday" looked like until now ;) Is that a new place in town?

  • Am i reading this right, sponsor a tree. Ipswich Borough Council should have bigger things to worry about. The state of our Town Centre should be their main concern. Messy streets, lack of Big Name shops are two things i can think of. Dear oh dear we pay council tax to these people.

  • So if I were to sponser a tree, what would happen if a branch fell and injured somebody, would I be responsible for their compo???? Seriously though how much more of the councils 'work' do they expect us Joe Public to do.?

  • It's a very good idea. I am not sure many people will call the number though, could some web pages not be set up with more information?
