A man will appear at crown court next month accused of throwing urine over a prison guard.

Alan Sykes has been charged with causing the administration of poison or a noxious thing, with intent to injure, aggrieve or annoy.

The 37-year-old gave no indication of plea to the charge at a brief hearing before a bench of three magistrates in Ipswich.

Sykes, currently serving a sentence at Wayland Prison, near Thetford, is accused of throwing a cup of urine at a guard, who was supervising meal time at Highpoint Prison, on September 30.

Sykes appeared in court via video link from Wayland Prison on Tuesday morning.

Magistrates said the alleged offence was indictable only and must be heard at crown court.

Sykes is due to appear at Ipswich Crown Court for a case management hearing on Tuesday, June 5.

He was remanded in custody as a serving prisoner until his next appearance.
