A teacher is urging people to donate cash for improvements at Ipswich Hospital after she completed a solo swim across the English Channel.

The challenge on September 3 took Louise Stratford, 33, from Redgrave, 17 hours to complete, with her reaching French shores in the dark.

After booking the swim in 2011, she decided it would be a great opportunity to support the Woolverstone Wish campaign which is raising money to refurbish the chemotherapy outpatient clinics and day-unit in the Woolverstone Wing of Ipswich Hospital.

Miss Stratford’s uncle, Stephen Rose, who died at the age of 53 in December 2010 after suffering from bowel cancer, was treated in the Woolverstone Wing.

She said she hoped the campaign achieved its £800,000 goal.

“Hopefully they will get the money they need to build it and it will help lots more people,” she said.

Miss Stratford, who teaches in Norwich, was well prepared for the Channel attempt. In 2010 she completed the Great East Swim at Alton Water and her training has also included the famous Hellespont swim, following in the strokes of Lord Byron from Europe to Asia.

She said she felt “relief” on completing the Channel swim, but added the training was the hardest part.
