A Suffolk centenarian enjoyed a glass of champagne and a slice of cake as she celebrated reaching 100 years surrounded by loved ones.

Florence Saunders, known as Nan, was delighted to receive birthday greetings from well-wishers, including The Queen, at Rendlesham Care Centre, near Woodbridge.

Visitors came from as far away as Portsmouth and Southampton to join the party on Saturday.

Nan grew up in Woodford Green, in the London borough of Redbridge, and lived for 30 years in Hornchurch before moving to Suffolk.

She worked for a wholesale firm as a comptometer operator - a forerunner of the electronic calculator and computer - and has three sons, Digby, Warren and Rawdon, as well as seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, most of whom were there to help celebrate her milestone birthday.

Nan, who is an expert at the daily crossword and loves gardening, was thrilled by her gifts and cards, including one from The Queen and another from work and pensions minister Iain Duncan Smith.
