THE internationally-famous Rendlesham “UFO incident” story was a cover-up to save the blushes of blundering US helicopter pilots, a special investigation claimed last night.

BBC Radio Suffolk broadcast a live programme to investigate the enduring mystery of the UFO “crash” in the Suffolk forest nearly 30 years ago – a story which has gripped enthusiasts across the world.

Host Mark Murphy spoke to a number of people who have an interest in the story in an attempt to uncover some truths during the live show, which was broadcast from the Cold War Museum on the former USAF Bentwaters base and the “landing” scene.

He said, after looking at the various theories, the one that seemed most plausible was that the “alien spacecraft” was actually an Apollo space rocket capsule which had been dropped following a helicopter accident early on Boxing Day 1980.

“The Woodbridge airbase was home to the Apollo recovery team which would be called out if the rocket landed anywhere other than the Pacific,” he explained.

“For whatever reason, it seems the helicopter crew went up on Christmas night and took the capsule out for a trip, suspended below it on chains.

“The helicopter was flying low and it smashed into the runway lights, causing it to drop the capsule into the forest. They then came back the next day to recover the capsule. It was then taken to an air force base in America and, apparently, its dimensions match up with those in the forest supposedly caused by the ‘alien spacecraft’.

“Lots of people saw lights in the sky that night and there was one couple, who are no longer with us, who swore they saw a helicopter carrying on chains what looked like an upside down ice cream cornet.”

The theory was proposed by Graham Haynes, who runs the Cold War Museum, and Mr Murphy added: “It seems a plausible theory.

“I’d love to believe it was a UFO that landed that night – but where’s the proof?”

Radio Suffolk and the East Anglian Daily Times are joining forces for an investigation into the incident, which is called Rendlesham Revealed.

  • Proof may require scientific - mathematical - logical explanation BUT there are things outside these perimeters which existed in the past, exist in the present and more than likely will continue into the future of which mainstream factors (for various reasons) fail to unearth. Simple put: “…therefore as a stranger give it welcome. There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.” ~ Shakespeare

  • I can offer Mr Murphy another theory backed up by proof . It seems that something came down in the forest, ask why? I do not believe it was deliberate something malfunctioned. It managed a temporary repair and flew south and landed in a field at Gedgrave and called for assistance .Which it received possibly the next daynight .The damaged part was replaced and thrown away I dont know why. Fast forward 25 years.I was metal detecting and dug this strange item that none of my contempories can identify. It is a hollow one inch (approx) cube with a solid cube inside with just enough room to spin, there is a crackfissure on one side of the internal cube Nowadays we accept the existence of unmanned flight and i believe this could be an early example being used to survey Bentwaters security at xmas a time when people relax. It should be noted that there was at that time a top secret facility on Havergate island, ideally placed to send an experimental drone over Rendlesham forest.

  • Mr Burls, it appears you imply I am mentally ill - however, it comes as no surprise that one with outright scepticism would lower themselves. It is quite obvious, laughable and typical that your post offers no alternative theories. Perhaps the radio-active bunnies met the guy with the truck full of manure and they in turn waved to the helicopter dangling the Apollo space capsule? Yes?

  • Charlie Tame, I think they have come back, I looked out of the sitting room window this morning andI was very worried to see a white dome shaped object about the size of a rocket capsule outside our garden. Dare I go out to fetch the paper (i) or will I be snatched up by some more alien beings, despite my kindness. Has skypoetone called for reinforcements or has he been carried away by a couple of strong men in white coats? Watch this space.

  • Having read quite a lot about the UFO Incident in Rendlesham Forest, and been interested enough to glean whatever information was forthcoming on the subject, I was surprised to read in your account of " the couple ,who are no longer with us" whose account has suddenly come to light after all these years ! Sounds like information coming to light to suit your article , rather than you reporting on information that has been in open for many years. Not that I am saying you are fabricating a story mind............

  • It beggars belief to the extreme how far officials will go to deny what was clearly seen AND touched that night in the forest. There are too many questions unanswered – like what happened to the movie film taken of the incident? – The photographs? The reports, etc? And now, today, I read this crazy piece of disinformation that the object in the forest that night was “An Apollo space rocket capsule” apparently seen chained to a helicopter that broke loose??? The lighthouse story failed – the burning manure story failed – now this – Good Heaven’s, what next?! What is more I am insulted along with all those who have studied the UFO phenomena over decades. The way I see it - we the public (of little to no significance?) are being drip-fed knowledge of extraterrestrial existence throughout the cosmos – why? I believe to cushion the blow of ET reality when Disclosure finally occurs. I have no idea why famous astronauts like Ed Mitchell would believe “We are NOT alone and have been visited for millennia” if something like it were not true. Could it be there are those here better experienced or qualified in their field to contradict his words?

  • Please convey my sympathies to your wife and cat John, I hope the alien was red or grey and not black with a white stripe on it's tail else future encounters may turn out rather unpleasant for all concerned. My only concern is that having once been treated well, the creature may return regularly causing close encounters of the furred kind to become a an unpleasant fact of life for you all. On the brighter side at least it was not a flying pig and does not sound much like a Tory, however politicians do seem to hang around waiting for free handouts.

  • With the greatest of respect to all concerned this does not account for the witnesses who saw the object "Leave" under it's own power, or how this took place over two nights without any witnesses reporting helicopter noises. The depressions in the forest floor are consistent with a "Soft" landing but not with something being hastily "Dropped", in that case it is most unlikely that even depressions would be formed. Two former UK Police stated that when they visited following the reports they saw and found nothing, yet the theory implies that the "Object" was left in the forest for some time. We seem to "Conveniently" ignore any evidence that does not fit the current theory such as the fact that this took place over two nights so that any object would have been left in the forest for almost the whole day, yet the local Police saw nothing.

  • As you will know I have long poo pooed the idea of UFOs, despite seeing many strange objects flying over our house, some of which landed in our garden, last November 5th. I remained unconvinced. However yesterday evening a strange object with a large bushy tail and bent ear came into our house through the cat flap, causing our cat to bolt for the bedroom, there doubtless to quiver under the duvet. This alien creature made straight for the cat food and devoured the lot then demanded a saucer of milk, which my wife bravely gave it. It then exited the house the way it had entered, and shortly afterwards we heard a loud roaring noise and on looking through the window, for we dare not go outside, we saw a flashing red light above our house with a strange whirling propeller. You may care to take this acount, faithfully recorded, into account when investigating with Radio Soppy, sorry mistake, Suffolk.

  • Nonsense - everybody knows that UFO's exist, that Pigs fly and the Tories really believe that we are "all in this together".
