Rushmere: Wildlife blogger and inventor in line for national award

Wildlife blogger Jason Alexander, of Rushmere, has been nominated for a national award for his blog where he films wildlife in his back garden.

Wildlife blogger Jason Alexander, of Rushmere, has been nominated for a national award for his blog where he films wildlife in his back garden.

A blogger and inventor from Suffolk has been nominated for a national blogging award.

Jason Alexander from Rushmere St Andrew runs wildlifegadgetman.com, a blog full of information on how to make watching wildlife easier.

Now it’s been selected as a contender for the National UK Blog Awards 2014.

Born and raised in Ipswich, Jason has had a passion for wildlife and technology from an early age.

His interests collided suddenly several years ago after an accident which left Jason incapacitated for 12 weeks.

Jason snapped his Achilles tendon during a game of badminton, and decided to spend the time it took to recover designing his own range of wildlife camera systems.

These proved enormously successful and led Jason to form his own company.

Jason moved from his wildlife camera company in 2010 to found a new wildlife website and online brand with broadcaster Simon King; Wildlife Whisperer.

It wasn’t until the beginning of 2013 that wildlifegadgetman.com was born. The website, says Jason, “gave me a chance to get back to my roots, which is designing different ways to watch wildlife”.

As well as tips and new inventions for those passionate about wildlife, much of the website is devoted to ‘upcycling’ projects, which means converting ordinary objects that would normally be wasted into something useful for the garden. For example old ketchup bottles can be turned into bird feeders.

All the blogs listed for the national awards are now subject to a public vote which ends of Sunday, January 26, after which 10 will be shortlisted.

Jason said: “I love what I do anyway but to have that recognition from others and knowing that the public has helped me get through the stage, joined by the leading figures within the industry, it would just be a great feeling.

“It helps me promote the importance of the wildlife that surrounds us whether it’s in our gardens or on the reserves.

Suffolk is a particularly rich landscape for the wildlife enthusiast, said Jason, who is also a member of the Oak Tree Farm in Rushmere St Andrew.

“There’s a huge amount of wildlife down there that we are just discovering. We’ll see hedgehogs and badgers, deers, barn owls, tawny owls, little owls and lots of different birds.

“It would be great to have the region represented in the awards.”
