Saxmundham: “I want my chips” screamed mother-of-three Danielle Miles before trying to burn down a kebab shop

A woman who set fire to a kebab shop because she was annoyed to find it had closed before she could pick up some chips has been jailed for 28 months.

Mother-of-three Danielle Miles had been out drinking in Samundham on November 11 and rang Zorbas kebab shop at 10pm to place an order, Ipswich Crown Court heard.

The shop closed at 11.15 pm and when 26-year-old Miles arrived shortly afterwards to find it shut she stood outside shouting “I want my chips” and threatening to set light to the premises, said Godfried Duah, prosecuting.

She had then put some burning paper through the letter box and when members of staff who lived at the premises looked out of the window they could see Miles laughing.

Mr Duah said a member of staff ran to the door and pulled out the paper and when Miles realised the police had been called she had run off.

The court heard that although only £50 of damage was caused to the door lives could have been put at risk if the fire had spread to neighbouring properties or if gas canisters near the front door had been damaged.

Miles, of Beaumont Cottages, Saxmundham admitted arson being reckless as to whether lives would be endangered and was jailed for 28 months.

Roger Thomson, for Miles, said she had three children aged five and under and deeply regretted what she had done.

He said she had been drinking and using cannabis and since the arson she had cut down her cannabis use and no longer went out drinking.

Mr Thomson said Miles had shouted abuse at staff inside the restaurant and had set light to the door while staff were looking out of the window. “It was done in their sight and there was no chance of it succeeding,” said Mr Thomson.

He said Miles had been on medication for depression at the time of the offence.

  • What an utterly ridiculous statement richard. So what you are saying is it's fine to drive at 100mph through a 30 zone as long as nothing bad happens, or it's ok to plant a bomb with the intention to kill cos if it doesn't detonate then no-one gets hurt?!

  • Really? So if someone tried to run you down in a car and only badly injured you, you wouldn't want the fact that they tried to kill you taken into account. That is, in essence, what you are saying.

  • Ok what she did was wrong , but I always thought a court dealt with facts and not " lives could have been put at risk if the fire had spread to neighbouring properties or if gas canisters near the front door had been damaged". It didn't happen that's the point, if people are going to be convicted on what "could" happen , rather than what did happen , we are all in trouble if we end up in court,,
