The Vulcan Arms Sizewell celebrates recieving the award for best pub sign

WHAT do Star Trek’s Mr Spock, a Roman god and a jet bomber have in common?

They have all helped the Vulcan Arms pub in Sizewell, near Leiston, scoop a prestigious award.

Landlord Trevor Fisk has won the Inn Sign Society’s Sign of the Year competition.

His unique creation features three variations on the vulcan theme – the Roman god, the delta-winged jet aircraft and the TV character Mr Spock.

Mr Fisk, who has been at the pub since 1997, decided to create a new sign after the old one was hit by a lorry around 18 months ago.

The vehicle collided with the post and the landlord decided the time was right for a spot of creativity.

“The old one was a bit ragged and it only had the pub name written on it,” he said. “I did a bit of doodling and thought I’d try and incorporate as many things associated with the word ‘vulcan’ as possible.

“It generates a lot of interest. We often get people stopping to take a photo.”

Mr Fisk’s sign was entered for the competition following a visit from local Inn Sign Society member Geoff White.

“The gentleman came in and said he was a member of this society and asked if he could take a picture for their magazine,” the landlord said. “Just before Christmas he contacted me and said the sign had been entered into their competition and it was the best one. It was a nice surprise and I’m very proud it has been recognised.”

Mike and Mary King, from Northampton, are regular visitors to the Vulcan Arms and stay at its caravan site, which is adjacent to the pub.

“The sign is very eye catching,” Mr King said. “It’s different from your usual Red Lion of King’s Head.”

Members of the Inn Sign Society will visit the pub at midday on January 19 to present Mr Fisk with a certificate.

The group’s vice chairman Anthony Collis said: “We try to recognise signs that are different from the run of the mill stuff. The one at the Vulcan Arms is quite extraordinary.”
