Sizwell C: Accommodation lessons from Sizewell B as Leiston is prepared for influx of construction workers

AN accommodation hostel for up to 3,000 workers building the new power station is to be created in the Leiston area – but its exact location still has to be determined.

There are three possible sites, two on the edge of town – one either side of King George’s Avenue – and one at the proposed entrance to the site at the junction with the Eastbridge Road and the B1122.

A hostel was built for the workers who came to Suffolk to help build Sizewell B during the late 1980s – that was beside the site and lessons have been learned from that.

When it was first opened it was “dry” – there were no bar facilities – but that had to be changed as the number of Sizewell workers overwhelmed Leiston’s pubs.

The new hostel is likely to have a bar and restaurant to give workers the chance to relax on site without necessarily having to go into the nearby town.

Sizewell C project manager Angela Piearce said the most important requirement for most workers was somewhere comfortable to stay with modern facilities but talking to local people had shown the importance of making sure they could integrate into the community.

“We have three options, but the fact that one is on the site and would mean that the workers would be able to walk from their accommodation to their work would be important to us,” she said.
