Suffolk Highways arranged the ferry service after closing the Bailey Bridge connecting Walberswick with Southwold due to safety fears.

“We understand that this closure will no doubt cause difficulties, and we apologise for this,” a spokesman said.

“However we hope you understand that we have had to make this decision for the safety of the users – this is our paramount priority and responsibility.

Suffolk Highways said it was working with the community to minimise the impact of the closure.

“One way we’re doing this is by engaging the Walberswick to Southwold Ferry Service to run a free service from 8am to 5pm Wednesday to Friday 5th inclusive.

“This is so users have the rest of the working week to make alternative arrangements when wanting to travel to and from Southwold.”

Signs have been posted at the site to ensure the public is aware.

“Work is ongoing to complete the assessment of the bridge’s condition, including what repairs are required and the cost associated with this,” the spokesman added.

“As soon as further details come to light we will keep you informed. The bridge will remained closed until further notice.”
