Stoke Ash: Tumbledown barn by A140 is taken down amid fears it could fall in road

The Old Barn, as it was in Stoke Ash

It was a famous sight for anyone driving along the A140 but now Stoke Ash’s old barn is no more.

The owners of the wooden barn, the proprietors of the The White Horse Inn opposite, took it down because of fears it was becoming dangerous to passing traffic.

Publican Shane Aldridge, 40, said that during his 13 years of running the pub, near Eye, the one-acre site which included the barn has been used for overflow parking.

He said: “There’s been old outbuildings there opposite the pub for hundreds of years.

“It’s a shame in a way as it was the last of the remaining buildings that had stood there.

“The barn has been used most recently as a bottle store but it’s had all sorts of uses over the years.

“Over the years there was a guy who put scaffolding on it and I think people saw it as a sign to try to prevent it falling into the road.”

Historically, the buildings were used for stables and accommodation for travellers moving across East Anglia as the pub was previously a coaching house.

Andrew Stringer, county councillor for the village, said it was about finding the right balance between persevering a historic building and road safety when taking the decision to bring the barn down.

Mr Aldridge said the barn, which had been modified several times over the decades and had been derelict for a while, was not listed.

The pub itself dates back to the early 17th Century, built during the reign of Charles I.
