Stowmarket: Carnival organisers call for help to raise money

The two-day programme of events for a town’s carnival is taking shape but the organisers still need help from residents and businesses.

Plans for the 53rd Stowmarket Carnival are well under way with a car show, procession and live music all being lined up.

But vice-chairman of the carnival committee, Justine Margetson, 46, said thousands of pounds would be needed to make the event a success.

She said: “We need sponsorship for the motorbike stunt team of £2,500 to enable them to come. We are trying to get companies to sponsor different aspects of the carnival – the arena acts, parts of the procession and carnival court.

“We need help – the carnival can only run with the support of companies and people.”

This year’s carnival, to be held on July 19 and 20 on the Recreation Ground, will have the theme of Children’s Books.

Sian Copeman, from the carnival, said: “Last year was a fantastic success with a record-breaking turnout – a testament to our community spirit and good sense of fun.

“Together we can make this year better than ever and with your help we can make this carnival absolutely unforgettable.”

Last November there were fears the carnival – usually a three-day event – may have to be cut to just a single day.

Thousands of pounds had to be raised again for 2013’s carnival to keep it going.

The organisers are holding a fun-day on May 3 at the Meadlands Recreation
Club in Stowmarket from noon. On the day the carnival’s prince and princess will be chosen.

The committee’s next meeting will be on Wednesday from 7pm at Cedars Hotel, all are welcome.
