Stowmarket: Help needed to save future carnival events

Stowmarket Carnival parade makes it's annual procession from Combs through the town centre last year.

A CARNIVAL chairman is calling on a town to get behind the event which is in danger of being cancelled.

A public meeting will take place next week to discuss the Stowmarket Carnival and its proposals to become a registered charity.

Zoe Lynch, 29, Stowmarket Carnival committee chairman said this year’s event would go ahead but future ones were in danger.

She said: “It’s an exciting time to change the carnival, it’s just to get more support in the public arena and look for more trustees and different people to bring their experiences to the committee. We need more people, it’s really down to six people on the committee. It really is the case that this year’s carnival could be the last. Health and Safety is an ever-changing environment and with that comes more costs.

“The traffic management will have to be done by Suffolk County Council which will come with a charge. We are in a situation where grants are available but there’s not as money as there was before. We need more people to fundraise, it’s a shame that not more people get involved. “Who knows about next year, it’s a case of us having to keep it going.

“We want people to get involved with coming on the procession and on the arena acts in the Recreation Ground.

“I think a lot of people feel it’s a huge commitment but we are asking people to do as little or as much as they can.”

This year’s carnival will run on July 19, 20, 21. A procession will travel around the town on July 20. The meeting will be held in The Cedars Hotel, Stowmarket, on March 6, at 7pm.

Fundraising for the carnival has so far reached half of the committee’s £4,000 target.
