A town’s football club which is on the hunt for a new home has said it would like to be based on a major playing fields area.

Stowmarket Town Football Club wants to re-locate as its current pitch is prone to flooding and has “limited” scope to be re-developed.

Club bosses were given a document by Mid Suffolk District Council with about half a dozen possible locations for its new site, which could also provide a multi-million pound sports facility for the growing town.

Nigel Jarvis, director of projects for the club, said: “At the moment Mid Suffolk District Council’s planning department and a national developer are working in consultation together to put up a fairly large development - Chilton Leys.

“I think if we had the choice the club would certainly like to see it around that area - it’s got the cricket club, the Salvation Army Football Team and the rugby club.

“We would be more than happy to share facilities with other sports groups in the town. It would make sense if the land was found in that area of town but how that happens is all up in the air.”

Following a petition, signed by more than 660 people, Mid Suffolk announced that Chilton Fields, which is council-owned would not be built on as part of the major homes development, Chilton Leys.

Dave Benham, corporate manager for economic development and tourism, for Mid Suffolk, said: “We will try everything in our power to help them find an alternative site. At this moment we cannot say where that is going to be.”
