A former Suffolk teacher and school band leader appeared in court today charged with historic allegations of sexual assault against one of his students.

Former Stowmarket Schools Concert Band leader Derek Cable is accused of three counts of indecent assault against a boy, between January 1975 and May 1976.

The assaults are alleged to have taken place during private tuition he was giving to the boy.

Nick Wray, defending Cable at Bury Magistrates Court, told the court that the 73-year-old denied the charges.

The case was committed to Ipswich Crown Court, with a trial window of between June 30 and August 8.

Prosecutor Tess Mann said: “This is an allegation whereby when the defendant was a music teacher, he’s accused of sexually assaulting a young student under the age of 16 on three separate occasions during private tuition at a school.”

Cable, now of Hastings, spoke only to confirm his full name and address, and kept his coat on throughout his brief appearance in the dock this morning.

He was released on unconditional bail to appear at Ipswich Crown Court next month. The preliminary hearing will take place at Ipswich Crown Court on Tuesday, March 4 at 10am.

Cable, formerly of Edgecombe Road, Stowmarket, was music director and conductor of Stowmarket Schools Concert Band, which he founded in 1961.

The band was highly-regarded and had toured the United Kingdom, Spain, France Germany and America.
