Hundreds of jobs could be lost if proposals to close a roast chicken plant near Stowmarket go ahead.
Bosses at 2 Sisters Food Group believe the factory at Haughley Park is not sustainable and will now hold a 45-day consultation period with workers and union officials.
It is estimated a closure could result in the loss of more than 600 jobs.
A spokesman for 2 Sisters described Haughley Park as an “ageing site” but that no decision has yet been made.
Officials at the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers union say a closure is not a decision they would welcome but that they would work to reduce the impact on members.
The company employees about 2,000 workers in the East Anglia region.
