A MOTORIST is tonight lucky to be alive after fleeing his car just minutes before a train ploughed into it near Stowmarket.
The drama unfolded in Newton Road shortly before 8pm when he swerved to avoid a pedestrian, smashed through a fence and onto the railway tracks.
He miraculously managed to escape from the silver Vauxhall Astra before the 18.43 service from Cambridge to Ipswich slammed into it.
The man, believed to be 38, suffered a head injury, which the ambulance service said was not thought to be life-threatening. He was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Ipswich Hospital by land ambulance.
The train’s driver, guard and the 24 passengers on board were assessed by paramedics but they all escaped unscathed.
The incident caused major hold-ups for rail passengers who had already been delayed after a person was hit by a train at Manor Park.

People walking on this road at ANY time of the day are lunatics!!! No footpath and a road with lots of bends its just sheer luck no one has been killed already!

The amount of pedestrians that don't wear reflective or light clothing is becoming a great concern, surely its common sense to be seen in the dark, or simply walking toward oncoming traffic, the above near miss resulted in an innocent driver nearly getting killed by a train, then there's the sad loss of an 18yr old pedestrians life only last week. Think people, be safe, be seen.
