Simon Bird, of Gainsborough Road, committed the offence despite have accepted a police caution three or four years ago after previously admitting a similar offence with another teenage girl.

The 42-year-old was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for a year as a consequence of being cautioned.

However, he subsequently struck up another relationship with a different girl whom he met through one of his discos.

Bird then groomed the girl while they were in contact through social media.

He befriended the teenager and then began to meet up with her late in the evenings.

The sexual nature of their relationship was discovered and the girl’s school contacted police.

Officers arrested Bird and during a number of police interviews the DJ admitted having an inappropriate relationship with a child.

Bird pleaded guilty before trial to sexual activity with a child when he appeared before Ipswich Crown Court.

He was sentenced to 54 months in prison.

The case was investigated by Suffolk Constabulary’s Gemini Team in Bury St Edmunds, which deals with serious sexual assaults.

After Bird’s sentencing Detective Sergeant Stuart Jeans said: “Bird’s conviction was as a result of positive action by not only police, but us working with the school and social services. This has concluded with a successful prosecution.

“We take all matters such as this seriously and if anyone has concerns we would encourage them to report them to police or their local authorities.”
