Members of congregations from around Stowmarket are to make a pilgrimage to 18 churches to mark the 100th anniversary of the diocese – in just one day.

Walkers from across the area are invited to take part in the event which will include the villages of Mendlesham, Cotton, Old Newton and Stowupland.

Rod Lucas, a church warden at Stowmarket’s parish church, St Peter and St Mary’s, said: “At each church a five-minute act of worship will take place based upon readings of the Bible and short prayers with the theme of journeys of the Bible.

“During the walk there will be time for reflection and for singing if people wish to do so.

“The Stowmarket Deanery consists of 18 churches in the town and villages in and around Stowmarket and the pilgrimage will involve and will call at each of the 18 churches.

“Starting at the outside edge of the deanery, separate walks will take place simultaneously so each group will meet up with other groups along the way and all will finish up at Holy Trinity Church, Stowupland, for a short service followed by refreshments.”

Each of the groups will start at a particular church, part of the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich, and will call at others along the route which will follow footpaths or minor roads wherever possible.

Mr Lucas said he wanted everyone who wished to take part to join in even they felt the walk would be too challenging.

Those who may want to travel by car or on bike are also invited to come along.

Anyone who would like to take part in the event on Saturday, August 16, should call 01449 774652.

A timetable is also available by calling the above number.
