Proposals to build a 55-bedroom hotel and more than 30 homes should be reviewed, according to a heritage society.

The Stowmarket Society has given its feedback on the outline planning application put forward for the hotel and homes off Prentice Road in the town.

Although it has broadly given its support the society has criticised the plans for giving “too little consideration” to the exterior surroundings of the homes which seem to be “nothing more than a bare car park”.

Retail Development Partnership, the firm intending to invest, has said the development will make a major contribution towards the town.

But in a planning letter, Jon Pattle, the society’s secretary, said: “There is also a part of the site alongside the entrance from Prentice Road which is consistently shown blank on all the site drawings and which really does need to be included in the scheme with firm proposals for landscape treatment.”

The society wants more information on the company’s plan for the areas around the development.

The letter continues: “A success of this development must be considered as part of the planning application. Leaving these aspects to be dealt with under conditions to an approval is far too late and is likely to lead to a poor quality scheme.”

It also wants to see firmer details on how plans to improve a riverside footpath might work along the River Gipping.

Retail Development Partnership has said that the plans have been designed in order to comply with the council’s aspirations for the area, set out in Mid Suffolk District Council’s planning guidance.

A total of 25 town houses, eight apartments and a restaurant are included in the proposals.
