The company owns Suffolk’s largest man-made reservoir and leases it to Alton Water Sports Centre Limited.

It manage activities at the site, which are available to both members and day visitors and include sailing, windsurfing and canoeing, as well as offering cycling, fishing and bird-watching opportunities.

In a letter to members of Alton Water, chairman Mark Hainsworth said they were renegotiating the lease for the site with Anglian Water, as the current agreement in place between the two companies expires in April next year.

Mr Hainsworth said: “I would like to reiterate that I, as chairman, would like to create a sustainable centre. We need to recognise that the future of the centre is changing and as such we need to evolve to meet those changes and maintain our use of Alton Water.”

Mr Hainsworth added Anglian Water had “made a statement of intent that they would like to develop Alton Water in line with their other water parks” and the organising body at the reservoir would need to reflect their aims.

Mr Hainsworth then outlined a development plan for the site, which would “focus on its membership, the public and our partnership with our landlord”.

When asked about potential developments, Antony Innes, from Anglian Water, said: “We’re always looking for ways to improve the facilities available at our water parks so they can continue to be fantastic places to visit all-year-round.

“Around two million people visit our parks each year and we want that number to continue to grow.

“The visitor centres at other water parks have recently been modernised and we’re now exploring similar options for Alton Water too.

“Any development and updates will be designed alongside our tenants to make sure we’re making the most of what’s available for visitors.”
