The popular BBC series, featuring Ian McShane in the title role, put Suffolk in the spotlight during the 1980s.

Aired on Sunday evenings over an eight year period, it was mostly filmed in Suffolk and Essex and regularly attracted around 15 million viewers.

The programme earned the villages where it was shot - including Long Melford, Clare and Preston St Mary - the tag of ‘Lovejoy country’ and the many antique shops in the area became famous as a result.

Keen viewers will remember the iconic black leather jacket the roguish antiques dealer always wore over a trademark white T-shirt. And now they will have a chance to buy it at an auction this Saturday at Mander Auctioneers in Sudbury.

The jacket is thought to have been one of four worn between 1986 and 1994. Auctioneer James Mander said the prized piece was acquired by the vendor in the 1990’s on set, following the filming of the final episode.

He said: “Although it is not an easy item to value, the jacket, which comes with some related ephemera from the show, has a guide price of £600 to £800.

“The vendor has decided to sell the jacket having witnessed the successful sale of the Lovejoy Antiques shop sign, which fetched £1,200 when sold at Mander’s auction recently.”
