Sudbury: New information on sexual assault in town

PUBLISHED: 15:08 28 March 2014 | UPDATED: 15:08 28 March 2014

Detectives investigating a sexual assault in Sudbury now have clearer timescales of the victim’s movements in the town on the night.

The woman, who is in her 30s, reported the incident to police on the morning of Monday March 24, stating that she had been sexually assaulted in the early hours of the Saturday.

A police team continue to work on the case and specialist trained officers have been working with the victim to get a clearer understanding of what happened and when.

The woman had spent the evening of March 21 out with a friend in Sudbury and became separated from her friend whilst at a nightclub in East Street.

Through the review of CCTV from around the town and businesses, officers have been able to establish that the victim left the club in East Street at around 2.05am on the Saturday.

The victim made her way to a taxi office in Gaol Lane and then was seen leaving the taxi office alone at 2.42am – she walks off along Gaol Lane away from the Market Hill in Sudbury.

The victim’s next recollection is waking up in an area near to Brundon Lane at around 3am.

The woman was in a dishevelled state with injuries to her body.

She asked for directions back to town from people working at a business and then a man assisted her and gave her a lift back into town. Police have spoken to this man who has given an account of helping a woman in a dishevelled state and giving her a lift to the East Street area of Sudbury.

Searches around the area in Brundon Lane have been carried out to see if there is anything forensically that could be linked to the assault.

Detective Inspector Kevin Hayward from the Joint Norfolk and Suffolk Major Investigation Team said:

“Through CCTV we now have a clearer understanding of timescales and the victim’s movements after leaving the club in East Street. We now have to establish where she went and with who after 2.42am when she is seen walking off down Gaol Lane and then waking up in the Brundon Lane area.

“We are very keen to hear from anyone who was in the Gaol Lane/Brundon Lane area of Sudbury between 2.40am and 3am on the Saturday who saw the victim either on her own or with another person.

“It is unlikely that there would have been many people around at this time in the morning, so if you were there and saw a woman either on her own or with someone else we would ask you to call us so we can establish if it was our victim or not.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the Joint Norfolk and Suffolk Major Investigation Team on 101 quoting SU/14/537 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111
