Sudbury: Part of redundant Uplands Middle School could be saved

10:45 27 March 2014

Part of a former middle school earmarked for demolition could be saved and used as a new base for social services.

Earlier this month, Suffolk County Council revealed that the redundant Uplands Middle School building in Sudbury would be bulldozed in April, despite failed attempts by a number of charitable organisations to retain it for community use.

No plans have been submitted for the York Road site at this stage, although the authority has confirmed its intention to sell the land for redevelopment.

Last night, a county council spokesman said the caretaker’s house was excluded from the demolition and no decision had been taken yet regarding its future.

He also said neighbouring Tudor Primary School and Ormiston Sudbury Academy would “take ownership” of the former Uplands playing fields.

At a recent Sudbury Town Council meeting, county councillor John Sayers said there was a possibility that social services could relocate from its current premises in Friars Street to the former Uplands caretaker’s house.

Town councillor Jack Owen agreed it would be a suitable use of the building, adding: “It would be a good location as there are some big estates in that area.”

Autism Anglia considered taking on the school as a Suffolk base.
