A small community theatre is hoping to inspire a new generation of thespians to take to the stage.
The Quay in Sudbury already offers a number of term-time courses aimed at children. From September, the theatre will also introduce drama workshops for young adults, aged 16 to 21.
According to Quay co-ordinator Nikki Murphy, the theatre has just run a series of successful summer workshops including a film-making course.
From August 30, master magician Michael J Fitch will run three-day workshops teaching youngsters the top secret tricks of his trade.
Participants will learn magic including cards, coins and ropes, and will get a chance to perform what they’ve learned on stage at the end of the course.
The Young People’s Theatre Groups will return to the Quay from September 16, offering three different groups run over 10 weeks, for five to seven year olds, eight to 11 year olds, and 11 to 15s.
Ms Murphy said the idea was to increase awareness of drama and theatre within specific age groups.
She said: “You really need young people in any organisation so it is vital for us to encourage youngsters to get involved.
“Our summer schools really make the theatre come alive – the children are so exuberant, and have so much input and enthusiasm.
“We would love to expand that to include teenagers and that is why we are launching the new group aimed at young people who maybe haven’t taken drama at school but would like to have a go at acting in a professional theatre environment.
“The main emphasis on all our courses is about learning the craft and having fun.”
For youngsters who want to enjoy the magic of theatre without getting involved in acting, the Quay offers a range of shows aimed specifically at children.
On September 21, the Theatre of Widdershins will present Three Billy Goats Gruff and other Furry Tails, told by a storyteller using puppets and props.
Prospective theatre group participants are asked to sign up by the first week in September. Call the Quay on 01787 374745.
