Archant

Warm weather and a raft of attractions drew in a crowd of around 4,000 revellers to Sudbury’s annual Party in the Park.

Now in its sixth year, the family event held yesterday in Belle Vue Park offered a range of activities from sporting challenges to dance demonstrations and live music.

The more energetic visitors were able to take the opportunity to try out a new skill, with coaching offered in everything from football, rugby and tennis to the more unusual circus skills workshop.

Others simply chose to kick back, relax and enjoy a picnic or ice-cream in the award-winning park, which is looking at its best for the annual Anglia in Bloom competition.

The party opening had a distinctly Brazilian flavour as the Samboomba Samba Band formed a lively and colourful procession through the park. There was plenty to occupy the younger visitors too with Punch and Judy shows, bouncy castles and bungee trampolines. Later on in the day, music lovers were able to chill out and listen to local bands.

The free event is run by the town council and aims to raise the profile of the diverse range of clubs and groups in and around Sudbury. Among those taking part were martial arts, boxing, dance, fitness and BMX clubs.

According to deputy town clerk, Jacqui Howells, Party in the Park has become an important date in the town’s events calendar.

She said: “It seems to be busier than ever this morning so we are hoping it will be the best attended yet. It’s important for us to keep it a free event where families can have a great day out and try out a number of activities without having to spend a lot of money.”
