Parts of Suffolk and Essex could see heavy downpours, thunder and flooding this afternoon – while other areas in the region remain dry.

The Met Office has updated its “yellow” weather warning for Eastern parts of the UK, after forecasts suggested the heavy showers and thunderstorms were likely to become more widespread than first thought.

Forecasters said, however, that the storms will be “hit and miss”.

“Some places will see heavy downpours while others stay dry,” the Met Office tweeted.

Homes and businesses have been warned flooding could happen “very quickly”, while lightning strikes or hail could make for difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

“Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services,” a spokesman added. “Power cuts might occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.”

Among the downpours, up to 30mm of rain could fall within an hour.

Showers are expected to ease by late evening.
