An animal sanctuary is in desperate need of volunteers to help look after its feathered and furry inhabitants, particularly during the coming colder months.

Suffolk and Essex Small Animal Welfare – known as SESAW – is a registered charity that cares for a wide variety of abandoned or injured animals at its premises in Leavenheath on the Suffolk/Essex border.

The cats, dogs, rabbits, birds and pasture animals are looked after by a devoted team of volunteers until new owners can be found.

According to Patricia Ferdinando from the shelter, SESAW is urgently seeking new volunteers.

Extra pairs of hands are needed to help with everything from cleaning out and feeding to walking and socialising the home’s animals.

She said: “We need reliable volunteers who can give up two or three hours a week to don welly boots and rubber gloves and help out with ‘hands-on’ animal care.

“Circumstances change and we lose volunteers along the way so we really need to get more people on board before the winter. It’s not glamorous work but it is very rewarding.”

One youngster who can vouch for this is 18-year-old Jedcia Rose, from Polstead, who has been helping at SESAW since she was 14.

She said: “You get to work as a member of a team and meet all sorts of different people. It has really boosted my confidence and has been good for my CV.

“You do get attached to some of the animals but it’s great when they get adopted into new loving homes. It’s varied work and I would recommend it to anyone.”

Anyone who is interested in volunteering can call the sanctuary on 01787 210888 or email info@sesaw.co.uk
