Supplies of malting barley are tightening as yields and quality look set to be hit by the prolonged heatwave across Europe, reports suggest.

Stowmarket-based malt firm Muntons said UK maltsters would be changing their normal intake specifications to allow more barley to be used as lower than average yields affects supplies.

Intake specifications have been altered across a number of different crops because of the effects of the prolonged hot, dry spell on plant growth.

“Whilst the European crop is lower than normal and lower than expected there will be sufficient volume available for demand but probably little surplus,” explained Muntons marketing boss Andy Janes. “The quality however is poorer than usual and therefore in order for maltsters, and therefore brewers, to maintain supply there may well have to be a lowering of the specification that the maltster and the brewer would normally impose on the farmer.”
