Suffolk: More bad weather to strike tonight

The county is in for another battering from stormy conditions tonight.

Some places in Suffolk could be hit by winds gusting up to 65mph.

Those speeds will probably be experienced in coastal areas, but further inland gusts could still be in excess of 50mph.

Chris Bell, from forecasters Weatherquest, said: “It’ll be strongest a few hours either side of midnight.

“There will be some heavy rain in there as well. We could see up to half an inch.

“The rain is arriving earlier (than the winds), around midday. The strong winds will lag behind the rain a little bit.”

A spokesman for the Highways Agency confirmed they would be keeping an eye on the wind speeds around the Orwell Bridge, near Ipswich.

“When winds reach 50mph it’s monitored to see how consistent it is,” she said. “If it reaches 60mph and stays consistent we may take the decision to close the bridge.”

She added that even at lower speeds some restriction may be placed on high sided vehicles using the bridge.

A spokesman for Suffolk County Council said: “All of our frontline services, including highways, carers and the fire service, are ready to respond to the forecast bad weather this weekend.

“We will be monitoring the situation throughout the weekend and would encourage people to take care of themselves and vulnerable neighbours, travel safely and check the local media and weather forecasts for updates.”

Fortunately the worst of
the weather looks like it will be confined to the middle of the night.

Mr Bell said the ferocity of
the winds should have died down by 3am. Although tomorrow will still be blustery, he expected it to be calmer.

Meanwhile drop-in sessions are being run for people hit by the worst of last year’s weather.
