County council leader Mark Bee has brought two relatively new councillors in to his new cabinet following the failed leadership bid by Colin Noble.

Jenny Antill, who represents Cosford Division, takes on Mr Noble’s role as cabinet member for finance and this is combined with responsibility for resource management and waste.

Gordon Jones is promoted to the cabinet and given responsibility for children’s services (except education).

They are the only new members of the cabinet. The responsibilities previously overseen by Richard Smith, who was sacked by Mr Bee alongside Mr Noble, have been spread among other cabinet members.

Transport spokesman Graham Newman will add planning to his portfolio while Mr Bee himself will take over direct responsibility for economic development.

Communities spokeswoman Becky Hopfensperger has environmental matters added to her portfolio.

Mr Bee has also appointed a number of deputy cabinet members.

Mrs Antill is a former investment analyst for Merrill Lynch in the City of London and Mr Bee said she was ideally placed to be responsible for the council’s £700 million budget – and to manage the four-year programme that is seeking to make cuts totalling £156 million.

Mr Bee said: “In deciding who to appoint to my cabinet, I have thought long and hard about the skills and personalities we need going forward.

“In these appointments, I firmly believe that we have the right mix.

“Leading Suffolk County Council is, and always has been, about more than just those sitting around table in cabinet member roles.

“It’s about consultation, open and public debate and partnership working. It’s only by working in this way that we will overcome the unprecedented financial and service challenges we are currently facing.

“I’m looking forward to working with my new cabinet colleagues and all councillors as we tackle the challenges ahead of us.”

  • A cabal of self-appointed party apparatchiks. Ensuring that nobody who doesn't agree with Mark Bee has anything to do with making any of the decisions about our county. This is a completely anti-democratic body which really shouldn't be tolerated.
