THE region’s ambulance service is warning people to take care in the wintry weather.

The bad weather conditions overnight created hazardous driving conditions but the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EEAST) is thanking motorists for using common sense.

Glenn Young, head of the health and emergency operations centres, said: “Clearly people are heeding the advice that the police, ourselves and motoring organisations are giving out to take extra care and only to make journeys that are absolutely necessary.

“While the snowy and icy conditions continue to present a hazard, particularly on smaller roads and side streets, motorists should remain particularly careful.” He said there has been a steady number of accidents but the numbers are not unusual.

Mr Young added: “The public should wear appropriate footwear whilst out in icy and snowy conditions to avoid injury especially on ungritted surfaces, and wrap up warm when going outside.

“Also, check on your family and neighbours to see that they are OK and can avoid having to go out in slippery conditions.”

“We rely on the public’s good sense to use the 999 service wisely.

“If you need advice but don’t have a serious or life threatening condition, consider the other options available to you such as calling NHS Direct on 0845 46 47 or contacting your local GP or pharmacist.”
