February in the YFC office is usually a time to get organised, tidy up and really start revving up for the busy months ahead. Not this year, writes Tory Lugsden

We started the month with the fantastic Stowmarket YFC ball held at Trinity Park, an amazing 400 people gathered for a night of partying and from what I’ve heard it was an outstanding event, well done Stow!

The County Quiz was our hotly contented event to start the year with some feisty questions to test all of the clubs set by the quiet one in the office, who knew who Ipswich Town’s 2nd highest goal scorer so far this season is? Certainly not me!

Well done to Gipping Valley for their win in the Junior competition.

The seniors were so competitive it went to sudden death and the time tested question of “how many members does Suffolk YFC have?”

Fortunately for Hadleigh YFC their team have paid attention in the county meetings and took the win.

All of this jollity was totally overshadowed by the plight of the farmers on the Somerset levels. So much so that county chairman Ed Binder decided that we couldn’t just sit back and do nothing, and seeing what our fantastic neighbours in Essex had achieved we had to act.

Press appeals and calls to members, supporters and farmers across the county has given an absolutely astounding response to our calls for forage.

We have 20 lorries ready to go to Somerset to help with the hell of dealing with floods, destroyed property and displaced livestock.

If this small contribution makes life that tiny bit easier for the poor farmers it can be the least we can do.

Subject to confirmation of logistics the Suffolk YFC donations should be on the move to the West Country over the weekend of March 8/9 – watch this space…..

May we take this opportunity to thank the farming community of Suffolk for an astounding response? We are truly humbled by people’s generosity, goodwill and strength of feeling for farmers in need.

Looking forward to March we have our Rally Part 1 taking place at Otley College on March 16 involving tractor handling, flower arranging, brick laying, welding and many more competitions.

At the end of March we have our annual farming and countryside competition giving the really clever farmers the time to shine!

And then our Country Fair continues its growth.

The Flying Fergies Display Team are confirmed along with police drugs dogs display, it’s going to be a great day. Schedules, booking forms and all details available via www.suffolkyoungfarmers.com
