Pressure group Stonewall has included two of the largest authorities in Suffolk in its list of 100 top employers nationally.

Stonewall campaigns for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community and has included Suffolk Constabulary and Suffolk County Council in its top 100 list of organisations which recognise the need to offer equal opportunities.

The police are at 58th position in the league table – maintaining a similar position to last year – while the county council has entered the top 100 for the first time at 61st place.

Adria Pittock, chair of the council’s LGBT staff network, said: “Suffolk County Council achieving such a high place in the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index Top 100 is fantastic news.

“It is proof positive of the support that the organisation is providing for lesbian, gay and bisexual staff and the genuine desire to see us be the best that we can be within the organisation.

“It is also an indicator of the commitment that Suffolk County Council is making to ensure that the needs of the wider lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community are considered across all of the council’s activities.”

Rebecca Hopfensperger, Suffolk’s cabinet member responsible for equalities, said: “I am delighted that Suffolk County Council is recognised as one of the Top 100 employers in this year’s Stonewall Index.

“This achievement acts as a demonstration of our commitment to support our LGBT staff and communities across Suffolk.”
