COMMUNITIES across Suffolk are already preparing to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee by lighting beacons.
It is hoped that there will be 2,012 beacons lit across the Commonwealth on June 4 to mark the historic occasion and 26 locations in Suffolk have already registered to light a beacon.
Areas around the country including Ipswich, Stowmarket, Bury St Edmunds and Eye will be taking part in the celebrations.
Bruno Peek, the pageant master for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, is excited about the day and hopes there will be even more locations in Suffolk taking part.
He said: “This is a great way to bring the community together.
“I would like to see a lot (of registered beacons) in Suffolk.
“It would be great to see 50 or maybe even 60, one to celebrate each year of the Queen’s life.”
There are more than 1,000 places across the commonwealth and other British territories who will be taking part in the event.
There are 40 venues in Norfolk already confirmed and 32 in Lincolnshire while Devon has the most planned with 51 venues registered.
The Queen will light a beacon at Buckingham Palace at 10.30pm on the day.
Mr Peek, who also organised the Golden Jubilee celebrations, believes it is a great opportunity for everyone in the country to come together, for an event that is unlikely to happen again in our lifetimes.
He said: “There’s something romantic about lighting beacons.
“It’s not just the effort people put into them, it’s the actual night when you’re sitting there knowing that 2,011 other locations around the world will do what you’re doing and you’re waiting for your turn.
“It’s amazing how many areas of the community are coming together in a common celebration in one of the most important moments of the Queen’s life.”
If you would like to register to light a beacon, or if you would like more information, please visit www.diamondjubileebeacons.co.uk.
Registrations to light beacons for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee will finish at the end of April.
