Griff Rhys Jones’ appointment as the new chancellor of Cardiff University has been “delayed”.

The TV personality and performer, who lives in Suffolk but was born in the Welsh city, has close ties to the area and was set to become the 23rd person to hold the post this afternoon.

But a panel of senior officials from the university - also known as “the court” - put the brakes on his appointment following their annual meeting.

A university spokesman said: “The appointment of Griff Rhys Jones as future chancellor of Cardiff University has been delayed.

“Following discussion, University Court referred the matter back to the University Council for further consideration. Professor Sir Martin Evans remains as chancellor until the end of his current term on July 31, 2014.”

Confusion surrounds the sudden change of heart after the famous TV actor, presenter and comedian had impressed university officials earlier this year.

His appointment was expected to be rubber stamped by the university’s court - which consists of around 100 senior officials.

However, it is believed concerns were raised at the meeting whether proper rules had been followed and the appointment suddenly blocked.

Cardiff University said it would not be going into any further detail on the matter at present.

Mr Jones, who is known for his work as an author, presenter and actor - including his partnership with late fellow comedian Mel Smith, was due to take up the honorary post in the summer.

Among those who had been looking forward to working with him had been vice chancellor Professor Colin Riordan, who said the star would have brought a “wealth of experience” to the role.

Ahead of the sudden u-turn Prof Riordan had spoken of Mr Jones’ strong links with Cardiff University - which included in him being made an honorary fellow in 2009.

Added to this, Mr Jones’ father Elwyn attended the university - and had often told his son that his days there were among “the happiest of his life”.
