A police manhunt for two men allegedly involved in a Suffolk kidnap and torture case last night turned to BBC Crimewatch for help.

The case was featured on the programme in an effort to trace Daniel Patterson and Zebadiah Rose, also known as Jason Walker, who they believe were involved with the armed abduction, blackmail and false imprisonment of Werner Serieux.

Mr Serieux was taken at gunpoint from Drinkstone, near Bury St Edmunds to London in September 2009.

He was then subjected to a nine-hour ordeal before escaping after his captors fell asleep.

Two of the kidnappers Farad Shabazz, 34, of Kilburn, and Nathan Carty, 25, of Stockwell, were jailed at Ipswich Crown Court in July 2010 for eight and six years respectively.

The court heard they had taken the law into their own hands after Mr Serieux took £16,000 from Shabazz with a promise he could achieve a high return on it, but only gave him back £4,000.

During his ordeal Mr Serieux was abducted from a cottage in Drinkstone, punched in the face, tortured by having his fingers bent back in an attempt to break them. He was then driven to a flat in London where he was blindfolded, tied up and shut in a cupboard.

After managing to escape Mr Serieux knocked at a neighbour’s flat to raise the alarm.

Shabazz and Carty, 25, of Stockwell, denied kidnap, false imprisonment, blackmail and having an imitation firearm with intent. However, after a trial Shabazz was convicted of all four charges and Carty was found guilty of the first three charges but not guilty of the firearm offence.

At their sentencing Judge Peter Fenn said he was satisfied that Shabazz was one of the main organisers of the kidnapping and that Carty was a “hired hand”.

During the trial the court heard Mr Serieux was a self-confessed conman who had carried out a number of frauds on gullible individuals, including Shabazz and some of his acquaintances. He had sought refuge at a cottage in the grounds of The Old Rectory at Drinkstone.

Now detectives have turned to Crimewatch in their continuing hunt to find Patterson and Rose.

Temporary Detective Inspector Trevor Prior from the Joint Norfolk and Suffolk Major Investigation Team said: “We have carried out many lines of enquiry since the kidnapping incident four years ago and since the conviction of the two men in 2010.

“Our enquiries have led us to suspect that Daniel Patterson and Zebadiah Rose had involvement with this violent kidnapping offence and we would ask anyone who knows the whereabouts of these two to contact us.

“We hope that by featuring the two men as wanted on BBC Crimewatch someone will come forward with information which will help us locate them.”

Anyone with information which could help trace Patterson and Rose should telephone 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
